Botox vs. Dysport: What's the difference?

5 min read

If you've started researching neuromodulators, you've likely seen both Botox and Dysport mentioned. They are the most common options for softening the lines created by repeated expression, and people often ask us which is better. The honest answer is that neither is universally better — they work in very similar ways, and the right choice depends on your anatomy, your goals, and the area being treated.

How neuromodulators work

Both Botox and Dysport are formulations of botulinum toxin type A. They temporarily relax the muscles responsible for expression lines — the forehead, the glabella between the brows, and the crow's feet around the eyes. By quieting those muscles, the skin above them smooths, and the face looks more rested without looking frozen.

Where they differ

The differences are subtle but real. Dysport tends to spread a bit more from the injection site, which can be an advantage in larger areas like the forehead and a consideration in precise zones. Some clients feel Dysport takes effect a day or two sooner, though both settle fully within about two weeks. Dosing is measured differently between the two, so unit counts are not directly comparable — which is why pricing per unit can look different even when the cost of a treatment is similar.

  • Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same way
  • Dysport may spread more, suiting broader treatment areas
  • Onset and longevity are comparable, typically 3–4 months
  • Unit dosing differs, so direct unit-to-unit comparison isn't meaningful

How we choose

We don't choose a product based on habit. At your consultation we assess your muscle strength, the depth of your lines, and how your face moves at rest and in expression. From there we recommend the option — and the placement — that will give you a softened, natural result. For some clients that means Dysport; for others, an alternative neuromodulator is the better fit.

The product matters less than the hand that places it. Natural results come from assessment, not from a brand name.

What to expect after

Treatment takes only a few minutes with minimal discomfort. You can return to your day, though we ask that you avoid exercise and lying flat for a short window afterward. Results develop over the first week and typically last three to four months before a maintenance visit is due.
